Seven days till Comic Con and my daughter comes to me super excited for the chance to cosplay.
"What would you like to cosplay as?" I ask.
"Zoey from K-Pop Demon Hunters!" she answers.
I pull up several pictures for her to choose her favorite costume and we head to my fabric hoard. After a few hours of digging through the bins upon bins of fabric, we find remnants of an old teal prom dress, pink and black ribbon, a few spare buckles, some gold/yellow fabric, and a separating zipper.
Step one: I rip apart the prom dress skirt and restitch it into a halter top.
Step two: I add the zipper to the front of the halter for easy on and off functionality.
Step three: I fold some bright pink ribbon into a flower design and stitch it down.
Step four: I add some black trim and using gold thread try out a few of the fancier stitch settings on my sewing machine to give the impression of gold trim.
Step five: Pick up some navy blue athletic pants at GoodWill (because apparently I have a dozen bins of fabric and no pieces of navy fabric larger than a square foot).
Step six: Top-stitch the gold/yellow fabric onto the pants.
Step seven: Attach some teal ribbon to the pants to look like suspenders.
And Voila! All done!
"But what about her knives, Mom?"
So, off I ran to Hobby Lobby for a bit of air-dry foam clay and mold-able plastic along with a half-dozen gold tassels.
First I try crumpling some wax, wrapping it in duct tape to get the shape of the daggers and then cover them with the mold-able plastic. These turn out fine, but are rather large for my daughter's hands. So I try again.
This time using the foam clay, I mold one to be the size and shape I want. But I need five more identical ones. So I trace out how big I made the first one and start molding the second dagger, using my traced outline of my first dagger as a pattern.
Three days to dry, and the daggers are ready to go, just in time.
My daughter had a great time at Con and received lots of compliments on her costume. She was over the moon thrilled. And that's how it's done, done, done!
